Dr. Smolderen is a psychologist/outcomes researcher and expert in vascular disease, specifically in studying behavioral risk factors, including depression, in peripheral artery disease (PAD) and its relationship with outcomes.She obtained her PhD in Health and Medical Psychology from the Tilburg University, the Netherlands in 2009, following which she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular outcomes research supported by the American Heart Association at the Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City.
She designed and led several multi-center peripheral artery disease registries, including an academic consortium that conducted the international 16-center PORTRAIT study enrolling 1,275 patients with intermittent claudication, and was supported by 3 consecutive PCORI grants and a Dutch career development award. She is also the developer of a patient-centered shared decision making tool for peripheral artery disease, called www.showme-pad.
Since 2020, Dr. Smolderen is Associate Professor at the Yale Department of Internal Medicine and has a secondary appointment within the Department of Psychiatry, and is the Co-Director of the Vascular Medicine Outcomes Program. She is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. She serves on editorial boards of Vascular Medicine, Health Psychology, and Psychosomatic Medicine, and has been asked to serve as the Chair of the Health Advocacy & Policy Council for the American Psychological Association’s Health Psychology Division 38 and to join their Division as a Board Member
With her work, Dr. Smolderen has been able to put on the agenda, a patient-centered focus for patients suffering from peripheral artery disease, a vulnerable population that is often still undertreated and underrecognized. Her work has been accordingly characterized by advocacy and demanding awareness for the patients’ voice, mental health burden of vulnerable groups in experiencing cardiovascular disease, highlighting the patients’ perspective, and working towards novel integrated care models.
