Dr. Isselbacher is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He completed both his medical residency and cardiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, after which he joined the staff of the Cardiology Division at Mass General. In 1996 he co-founded and had since remained co-PI of IRAD (the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection), which is the world’s preeminent aortic dissection research group. Then, in 1999, he co-founded the MGH Thoracic Aortic Center and has served as its Co-Director for the past 22 years. He is formerly the Associate Director of the MGH Heart Center and the Medical Director of the MGH Cardiology Medicine Practice. His research has focused on the diagnosis and management of thoracic aortic disease. He has authored over 130 original research manuscripts and over 39 book chapters on thoracic aortic disease and heart valve disease. He was a co-author of the “2010 ACC/AHA Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Patients with Thoracic Aortic Disease" and the Chair of the Writing Committee of the recently published “2022 ACC/AHA Guideline for the Diagnosis and Management of Aortic Disease." He is actively involved in training residents and fellows and was a recipient of the W. Proctor Harvey Young Teacher Award from the American College of Cardiology.
